This is a 1938-S Jefferson Nickel, the first year of issue for the Jefferson design by Felix Schlag. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson with inscriptions “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “LIBERTY 1938.” The reverse shows Monticello, Jefferson’s home, with the “S” mint mark to the right of the building, denoting San Francisco Mint.
